Today the City of Tshwane, previously Northen Gauteng, is dominated by the sprawling city of Pretoria, administrative capital of South Africa, and its many suburbs. Until recently is was the bastion of theAfrikaaner culture and the home of apartheid. Its history as the seat of government extends to 1860, when it achieved this status in the Zuid-Afrikansche Republiek.

From Union to Republic and now democracy, Pretoria's picturesque ridges have witnessed two wars, the anguish of Apartheid and a coming together on 10 May 1994, as South Africans celebrated a new leder for a new country. Today with the amalgamation of the old and the new a harmonious multiracial culture has been born.

Both the Metsweding and Tshwane Metropolitan regions have a a wide variety of attractions to offer visitors, 
with several tourism routes that highlight their natural, cultural and historical attractions.

Its much cherished opulence of Jakaranda trees sheds purple blooms onto its streets and shades the multitude of monuments and statues dotted around the city. The region in September and October is a tribute to Spring.

Visitors will be surprised by the metro's natural attractions. It's home to the Rietvlei Nature Reserve which features amongst others the Big Five, Nature Reserve; and the Wonderboom Nature Reserve, famed for its 1 000-year-old Wonderboom (wonder tree).

The attraction of the highveld plains, with their fertile lands and favourable climatic conditions (it has less wind than any other region in South Africa) has attracted more about three million people of many varied cultures to put down permanent roots.

The Zoological Gardens, one of the best in the world will keep you entertained for a full day. And if you are after more exercise take to the nature trail on the Moreleta Spruit. Evening entertainment, like most cities, consists of the usual clubs, movie houses and many restuarants.

The neighboring Metsweding region offers vast stretches of Highveld bush. Here you can be entertained with hot air ballooning, horse riding, hiking and walking, mountain biking, game viewing and bird watching, all in a rustic setting.
