General Information

A few years ago, Ekurhuleni was known as the East Rand. Ekurhuleni consist of largely of towns set up to serve the growing mine industry. Many towns in Ekurhuleni are still part of this growing industrial and profitable region. The towns consists of various sizes in Ekurhuleni, and they were all previously forerunners of fortune. All of the town are now quiet municipalities which provide a home to those looking to escape the commotion of the big city.

Germiston is one of the largest towns in Ekurhuleni which has a Scottich name.Once Germiston had a large Welsh community of coalworkers whose voices became famous countrywide for choir. The choir reflected the different homelands of European settlers to this region.

Ekurhuleni, means "a place of peace" in Tsonga. It is symbolic of the diversity of the new city and of its vision of an ethical and progressive community. Ekurhuleni produce 23% of the Gross Geographic Product of Gauteng.

Boksburg has a large population that currently revels in its many recreational facilities. The descendants of Boksburg are miners from throughout the world. They set up dams along the Vogelfontein spruit. They were all progressive pioneers who searched for a way to make a home for their children in a strange new land.

Ekurhuleni highlights most of the attractions of largely mining and residential region centre around the many man-made lakes. An outing to the Boksburg, Benoni, or Bruma Lakes all offer opportunities to enjoy invigorating watersports or to simply relax and feed the ducks from the shores.

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, near Heidelberg, has 66km of hiking trails(with overnight huts) or for the less energetic there is a 60km drive. Also on the reserve in the Diepkloof Farm Museum. Whilst in the area it is worth visiting the Heidelberg Transport Museum.

Ekurhuleni is one of the 5 districts of Gauteng province of South Africa and one of the 8 metropolitan municipalities of South Africa.
